3 Afghans killed, NATO chopper destroyed in attack
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? An attack on a U.S. military base killed three Afghan intelligence employees and destroyed a NATO helicopter, Afghan and coalition officials said Tuesday.
Separately, a teenage suicide bomber on Tuesday walked into a shop in western Afghanistan and blew himself up, killing five people.
The attack on Bagram Air Field, a sprawling American base north of Kabul, occurred around 10 p.m. Monday. Militants occasionally fire mortars or rockets at Bagram, but the attacks usually cause little or no damage.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on the base.
"Four rounds hit," coalition spokesman Army Maj. Adam Wojack said, adding that it was unclear whether rockets or mortars landed on the base. "One of the rounds hit the helicopter and started a fire, which destroyed it."
Both Afghan and coalition forces were inside the Chinook CH47 when it was hit, he said. Wojack said the three Afghans died and an unspecified number of coalition troops were injured in the attack, but NATO policy prevented him from disclosing details about their injuries.
An Afghan government official in Parwan province where the base is located confirmed that three Afghan intelligence employees were killed. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose information to the media, said two Afghan policemen were injured in the attack.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in a statement that the rockets fired by the group's fighters killed nine Afghan intelligence workers and four Americans at the base. However, the insurgents often exaggerate the death toll of their attacks.
In an attack last month on Bagram, an insurgent rocket damaged a top U.S. general's plane that was parked on the tarmac. The Taliban also claimed responsibility for that attack, saying they had fired rockets that landed near the C-17 transport plane, which had flown U.S. Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to Bagram.
Dempsey was in his staff quarters when the rockets landed and was not hurt in the attack, but the damage to his plane forced him to use another aircraft for his ongoing flight to Iraq.
Two aircraft maintenance workers were lightly wounded by shrapnel, and a nearby helicopter was damaged.
Meanwhile, the suicide bombing Tuesday took place in Kushki Kuhna district of Herat province, said Noor Khan Nikzad, a spokesman for the provincial police chief. The province in western Afghanistan is one of the more peaceful areas of the country but it has been the scene of a rising number of attacks in recent years.
The target of the attack was Abdul Hakim, a community leader who commanded a local militia, according to Mohammad Ibrahim Kushki, the former top official in the district.
"The bomber was around 14 years old," he said. "He went to the shop, shook hands with Hakim and then blew himself up."

Morgan Stanley, Citigroup settle brokerage dispute
(Reuters) - Morgan Stanley
The brokerage business was meant to stabilize Morgan Stanley's revenue during economic cycles but has not been nearly as profitable as the investment bank had hoped. Costs have run over and technology problems have dogged the joint venture since its inception.
"Morgan Stanley has fabulously disappointed investors with the execution of its integration plans," said Brad Hintz, a former Morgan Stanley treasurer who is now a bank analyst at Bernstein Research.
The banks restructured the deal so Morgan Stanley can buy Citigroup's 49 percent stake faster than previously planned. The price they agreed to will trigger a $2.9 billion after-tax charge for Citigroup, which was holding the business on its books at a much higher value. That charge would wipe out analysts' third-quarter profit forecast for the bank.
But it will also allow the banks to move past the negotiating table and focus on plans to fix their businesses.
Morgan Stanley's wealth management business is a key component of its strategy to smooth out earnings, which have been highly volatile over the past several years, and to delve deeper into more reliable revenue streams.
Its wealth and asset management revenue now represents half of net revenue, up from 31 percent in 2007, and its wealth management division has been delivering quarterly revenue in a range of $3 billion to $3.4 billion, even in a flat interest rate environment.
But to achieve its goal of boosting wealth management pretax profit margins to a "midteens" range by June from the current 12 percent, Morgan Stanley will have to deliver on aggressive cost-cutting targets.
At a Barclays conference on Tuesday, Morgan Stanley Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat said that she and other senior executives "remain resolute" on meeting their profit goals by mid-2013. Eventually, when market conditions improve, management expects the business to deliver margins of 20 percent or more.
"The business provides a stable revenue stream with margin upside," Porat said.
The CFO detailed plans to cut expenses by $300 million a year to reach profit targets, and noted that Morgan Stanley's return on equity will increase as it buys a greater stake in Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, since the bank is already holding capital against 100 percent of the business, but had only been taking in 51 percent of its profits.
However, Porat also said the bank expects to take a charge this quarter to reflect the declining value of old software, as well as expenses related to staff cuts and office consolidation.
DEAL TERMS
Morgan Stanley and Citigroup agreed to the joint venture in 2009 in the wake of the financial crisis. Morgan Stanley, the majority owner, had always expected to buy out Citigroup, but it was unclear how much it would have to pay.
The two parties had brought the matter to an independent arbitrator for an appraisal when they could not agree on a price. But the decision announced on Tuesday was made by the two banks and not the arbitrator, Perella Weinberg Partners, a source familiar with the matter said.
Under terms of the agreement, Morgan Stanley will buy another 14 percent of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney now and will buy Citigroup's remaining 35 percent stake by June 1, 2015. Each transaction will be based on the $13.5 billion valuation, and client deposits will be transferred to Morgan Stanley at no premium. The deal is subject to regulatory approval.
For Citigroup, the sale is another step in Chief Executive Vikram Pandit's campaign to bolster capital levels and shed assets that are not part of a long-term business plan. Those assets, known as Citi Holdings, have declined from a height of $898 billion in the first quarter of 2009 to $191 billion at the end of June.
"As we have shown, the more we put the past behind us, the more we can focus on our future, which is in the core businesses in Citicorp," Pandit said in a statement.
The charge that Citi will have to take amounts to about 99 cents a share, which would wipe out the 99 cents a share of earnings that analysts, on average, had estimated Citigroup would report for the third quarter.
However, the charge will not affect Citigroup's capital levels under Basel III regulatory measures, the bank said in an 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday. Morgan Stanley's forthcoming $1.89 billion cash payment to increase its stake will also boost Citi's estimated Tier 1 common regulatory capital ratio by about 14 basis points under Basel III.
INDUSTRY BAROMETER
The outcome of the dispute was keenly awaited by Wall Street because it could offer clues on expectations of future profitability in the brokerage sector, which has been suffering through low interest rates and weak trading activity for several years.
Morgan Stanley Smith Barney is the biggest brokerage in the United States with nearly 17,000 financial advisers and $1.71 trillion in assets, so its value is seen as a barometer for the industry.
The deal was seen as a win for Morgan Stanley because the final value came in closer to its initial $9 billion valuation of the business than to Citi's $23 billion balance-sheet valuation.
"It was a bad transaction for Citi, but the market has known it was probably going to go against them for awhile, so at least it brings closure," said David Trone, a bank analyst with JMP Securities. "Sometimes you just want to sell something and you'll take whatever price you can get."
Both companies' stock prices rose on the news. Citigroup shares were up 2.61 percent at $32.66, and Morgan Stanley shares were up 3.85 percent at $17.25 at the close of trading on Tuesday afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange.
Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman has made the case that the sheer scale and breadth of the business, combined with overlaps in lending, investment banking and trading, will give the firm an edge and allow it to meet its profit targets.
But after a dozen quarters of lackluster performance, investors have become impatient. Mike Mayo, a CLSA analyst, recently upgraded Morgan Stanley shares to "buy" partly because of shareholder pressure on management to deliver better returns.
At the conference on Tuesday, an investor poll said Morgan Stanley Smith Barney reaching its profit target next year was a "very important" factor in whether to own Morgan Stanley shares.
Although the company's low appraisal for the value of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney was largely viewed as a negotiating tactic, it also raised additional questions about how profitable the business can be over the long term, analysts said.
"Morgan Stanley got a great bargain here in the transactional sense," said Trone. "The problem is, this is a key unit for them, and now they're going to have to spend the next several years convincing the Street that it's worth more than ($13.5 billion)."

We’ve already seen earlier leaks suggesting that Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2 may be headed to Sprint and T-Mobile in the U.S., and today further leakage seems to indicate that both AT&T and Verizon will also be joining the fray. Several leaked screenshots obtained by BriefMobile seemingly confirm the existence of the SGH-i317 for Ma Bell and SCH-i605 for Big Red, which if accurate, would indicate a Note 2 launch on all four major mobile networks.
Samsung has yet to confirm its stateside plans for the Note 2, however if it were to secure a spot on the four largest carriers, just as it did with the Galaxy S3, it’d be another big win for the Korean manufacturer. A possible Note 2 launch on Verizon is particularly surprising to us, given that the carrier will likely launch two competing devices around the same time -- LG’s Intuition (Optimus Vu 2) and HTC’s rumored 5-incher. The assumption had been that Big Red was prepping these devices to compete against the Note 2 on other networks.
But let’s remember that just because Note 2 variants exist on each carrier now, doesn’t mean all of them will see the light of day. We’ve known devices to have been pulled before release in the past. Nevertheless, we’re sure Note fans on all four major U.S. networks will be crossing their fingers in the lead up to Samsung’s official announcement.

Most commercial lease clauses fall into two major categories: monetary and non-monetary. Monetary clauses can be more than just the amount paid for rent. There are several types of monetary clauses, and the small business owner must weigh the pros and cons of each. A ?gross lease? requires the commercial tenant to pay a flat monthly amount of rent with no consideration to other costs of real estate ownership. The commercial landlord would be responsible for insurance, repairs, taxes and other building costs. In a ?net lease,? the commercial tenant pays monthly rent plus some or all of the real estate taxes. If the commercial tenant is leasing a portion of a larger building, special care should be used to ensure the small business owner is paying on the portion actually being leased. It is customary to allocate the real estate taxes on the basis of the proportion (square foot basis) of space leased.
Paying some or all of the landlord?s operating expenses is enlarged with the ?net-net lease? and ?net-net-net (triple net) lease? type agreements. A net-net lease agreement requires the tenant to pay not only a monthly rental amount but the landlord?s real estate taxes and insurance expenses on proportional space basis. The payment of the commercial landlord?s expenses becomes income since operating expenses of real estate ownership is reduced. If there is a fire or other covered loss to the building, as provided by the insurance policy, the commercial tenant is not usually afforded any insurance proceeds since there is no insurable interest in the lost. The commercial tenant should, on the other hand, have insurance coverage on their business assets. The triple net lease agreement requires that the commercial tenant pay a monthly rent and all landlord operating expenses, such taxes, insurance and maintenance.
Non-monetary type clauses are important and can have far reaching financial effects on your business. One of the key clauses a small business owner should consider is an ?out clause.? How do I get out of this lease? As mentioned, New York courts do not afford the same level of protection to a commercial lessee as they do to a residential lessee. If a residential renter wants out of a lease, they can simply notify the landlord and, in most cases, is required to pay a month?s rent. Another option is to assign the remaining portion of the lease to another party. A landlord cannot unreasonably withhold permission from this action.
However, in a commercial lease, a commercial landlord usually can prohibit an assignment and the small business owner may be responsible for rent payments until another commercial tenant is located. In a sluggish economy, this could take several months.
Another concern for the small business owner is to correctly identify the business entity that is entering into the lease agreement. If your business is a corporation, limited liability company, limited partnership or other business entity, the entity?s name should be stated on the lease agreement. Avoid entering into the lease and signing it only in your name since that action would make you personally liable on the agreement. The lease agreement should name your business entity as the lessee, and you should sign the agreement in a representative capacity.
Commercial lease agreements are complicated documents with far reaching legal and financial implications. Before you bind your business or yourself, you should seek guidance from an attorney.

Presenting at Conferences: 5 Benefits for Your Healthcare Business
I?m just back from the 2012?GANZ Gestalt Conference in Melbourne where I had lots of time to reflect on my therapy work, as well as be exposed to the work and thinking of many other therapists in my field.
Attending conferences is an essential part of the ongoing training for all healthcare professionals. What was unique about this conference for me was I was presenting.
This was the first time I had presented at a conference (that?s me in the image above taking Q & A after my presentation), so I was also ?feeling mildy anxious in the lead up to the conference, to say the least.
However, in my usual style, I couldn?t keep my marketing hat off. ?I started to think about how presenting can help you to grow your healthcare business. I think there are numerous benefits of presenting to other healthcare professionals.
1. You can express your unique passion for your niche while educating and inspiring others
It certainly felt like quite a risk for me to present at this conference. This wasn?t some dry presentation of theory or methodology, but instead was a ?case conversation?. This meant I was sharing an actual case from my practice with the attendees and then facilitating a discussion about the case. It was pretty scary putting my work out there and having it examined by my peers, but I?m really glad I did it.
What the experience helped remind me is why I do this work and what I?m passionate about. The process of putting together a coherent and engaging presentation was challenging, but also helpful for my own professional development. Because I was able to access my passion for the area I work in, I made it a point to convey this to the audience. I also wanted to convey several important learning points to the attendees about the subject matter.
It?s a great feeling knowing I have educated and hopefully inspired others professionals working in my area. The ripple effect of this shouldn?t be discounted.
2. Other professionals will remember you because of your presentation
Because you have taken a risk and presented your work to other professionals, this also means it?s more likely you?ll be remembered by the attendees. Hopefully you?ve conveyed your passion, enthusiasm and enjoyment of your niche and this has also inspired those listening.
I still remember inspiring presentations at conferences from over 10 years ago. The power of an engaging presentation means that you can be front-of-mind the next time one of the attendees needs a referral for someone in your niche.
While this can?t be qualitatively proven, it?s just the nature of business that people refer to those that they know, like and trust and know are?competent.
I had many people come up to me after my presentation to thank me for it. These were people I had never met before, but they felt they could approach me and speak to me because they had attended the presentation. This continued even as I was at the airport getting ready to leave! As a result, I?ve now made many new connections with other therapy colleagues.
3. You can position yourself as an authority in your chosen area of interest
I?ve written many times about the power of positioning yourself as an authority in a specific area within your field. This can have long-term benefits for your clients, as well as your healthcare business.
Through your presentation, you are also solidifying yourself as someone who is an authority in a particular area. This can have a powerful ripple effect with you becoming known as the ?go-to? person in that area.
The very nature of presenting means that you?ve done extensive work, and possibly research, in the field you?re speaking about. You also have unique experiences that other can learn from.
4. Your presentation can continue to deliver ongoing benefits online after you finish
Did you know that after you presentation is over you can upload it to Slideshare?so others can access your slides and read about your presentation?
This a great way to have your presentation live on after it?s finished. It?s also an effective way to drive more traffic to your website and increase your authority and credibility.
If you use SlideShare, make sure you have an engaging description of the presentation and add your website URL so people know how to contact you. I recommend you add your business name and logo to the slides as well so they are identifiable. Unfortunately the conference I was at prohibited any branding, but this can always be added afterwards and before you upload your slides to SlideShare.
The other great thing is you can embed your slides in any website once they?re uploaded, like I?ve done below.
5. Presenting Tip: Avoid ?Death by PowerPoint?
One word on presenting. I am still amazed at the number of times I experienced ?death by PowerPoint? at this conference.
If you don?t know what that is, it?s very likely you?ve experienced it. ?Death by PowerPoint? is when you feel overwhelmed by a huge amount of bullet points and words on every powerpoint slide. The reality is people can?t read great expanses of text and listen to you at the same time. In the end you just lose your audience, which often leads to a dull and dry presentation.
I was inspired by Seth Godin?s article a while back called Really Bad Powerpoint?and 9 Steps to PowerPoint Magic.
I try to follow his rule of never, ever having more than 6 words on a page. Instead, use images to trigger an emotional reaction and then speak to the image.
You can see from my slides above how I mostly did this. It makes for a much more engaging PowerPoint and a very memorable presentation for the attendees.

Saturday's play at US Open delayed by rain
NEW YORK (AP) ? The start of play in the U.S. Open men's semifinals was delayed Saturday, with heavy rain falling and a tornado warning in effect.
A storm hit Flushing Meadows at about 10 a.m., dumping showers that continued past 11 a.m., when Olympic champion Andy Murray was supposed to begin his match against 2010 Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych.
Saturday's schedule also included the other men's semifinal, between defending champion Novak Djokovic and fourth-seeded David Ferrer, and ? at night ? the women's final, between 14-time major champion Serena Williams and No. 1 Victoria Azarenka.
The U.S. Open is the only Grand Slam tournament that schedules two men's semifinals on Saturday. If both aren't completed Saturday, the men's final can't be played as scheduled Sunday and needs to be delayed until Monday ? which has happened each of the past four years in New York.
The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for the New York City boroughs of Queens ? home to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center ? and Brooklyn as a line of strong thunderstorms moved through. During the women's semifinals Friday, it was muggy with temperatures in the 80s, though Williams didn't have to worry much about the weather or anything else, really.
Her 6-1, 6-2 victory over the 10th-seeded Sara Errani of Italy turned out exactly the way pretty much everyone expected. Even Errani, who acknowledged afterward her main goal was pushing the match longer than an hour.

Two years before that, Williams launched into her infamous foot-fault tirade and was docked a point on match point, ending a semifinal loss to Kim Clijsters.
When it was mentioned to Williams that nothing of that sort has happened this year, she replied: "Hey, it's not done yet."
"I did grunt once today, and I thought, 'God, I hope I don't lose the point,'" said Williams, who has lost 19 games in six matches so far. "Like I said, my goal this year was not to get in any fights."
