Justin Bieber's monkey quarantined in Germany
BERLIN (AP) ? Justin Bieber had to leave a monkey in quarantine after landing in Germany last week without the necessary papers for the animal, an official said Saturday.
The 19-year-old singer arrived at Munich airport last Thursday. When he went through customs, he didn't have the documentation necessary to bring the capuchin monkey into the country, so the animal had to stay with authorities, customs spokesman Thomas Meister said.
Bieber performed in Munich on Thursday, beginning the latest leg of his European tour. He later tweeted: "Munich was a good time. And loud. The bus is headed to Vienna now. U coming?" He didn't mention the monkey.
The Canadian singer is giving several concerts in Austria and then in Germany over the next week.
Bieber had a trying stay in London recently. The star struggled with his breathing and fainted backstage at a show, was taken to a hospital and then was caught on camera clashing with a paparazzo. Days earlier, he was booed by his beloved fans when he showed up late to a concert.

North Korea is no 'paper tiger', warns US official as regime puts rockets on standby
The threats to the U.S. are becoming more strident as North Korea's leader, Kim Jung Un, says his rockets are ready to strike America at any time. But experts do not believe Pyongyang has the capabilities it claims.

North Korea put its rocket units on standby Friday to attack U.S. military bases in South Korea and the Pacific, after repeated threats and one day after two American stealth bombers flew over the Korean Peninsula in a military exercise.
A U.S. official warned that the isolated communist state is ?not a paper tiger? and its reaction should not be dismissed as ?pure bluster.?
According to the North Korea's official KCNA news agency, the country's leader Kim Jong Un ?judged the time has come to settle accounts with the U.S. imperialists in view of the prevailing situation? at a midnight meeting of top generals, Reuters reported.
The latest threat comes one day after?two nuclear-capable stealth bombers flew from Missouri?to drop inert munitions on a range in South Korea as part of a major military exercise.

The U.S. official emphasized the danger posed by North Korea?s military and the unpredictable nature of its 30-year-old leader.

What's not clear right now is how much risk Kim Jong Un is willing to run to show the world and domestic elites that he's a tough guy,? said the official, who asked not to be named. ?His inexperience is certain -- his wisdom is still very much in question.?
There was a mass demonstration in support of Kim?involving tens of thousands of people?in the main square of North Korean capital Pyongyang Friday, The Associated Press reported.

North Korea routinely issues hostile statements but analysts have noted recent remarks have become more belligerent. In December, the North carried out a long-range rocket test and then detonated a nuclear bomb in a test earlier this year.
North Korea's young leader Kim Jong-un has issued almost daily threats, including the threat of nuclear strikes on Washington, D.C., and Seoul. In addition, Pyongyang has put its troops on combat readiness, warning that war "may break out at any moment." NBC's Ian Williams reports.
At a daily news briefing Friday, China?s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei said China was calling for an easing of tensions.
But some fear the situation could be getting out of control.
"It seems that Kim Jong Un is in the driving seat of a train that has been taken on a joyride," Lee Min-yong, an expert on North Korea at Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, told Reuters.
Russia, meanwhile, appeared to criticize the U.S. over Thursday's bomber mission.
"We are concerned that alongside the adequate, collective reaction of the U.N. Security Council, unilateral action is being taken around North Korea that is increasing military activity," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters in Moscow, according to Reuters.
"The situation could simply get out of control; it is slipping toward the spiral of a vicious cycle," he said.

Army formally declines Purple Hearts for Fort Hood shooting victims

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - The U.S. Army on Friday formally declined to award Purple Heart medals to the victims of Major Nidal Hasan's shooting rampage at Fort Hood, saying the move would damage his ability to receive a fair trial.
The Army in a position paper said that awarding the medal to those wounded and posthumously to those killed in the November 2009 attack would 'set the stage for a formal declaration that Major Hasan is a terrorist' because the medal is presented to military members who are 'wounded or killed in any action against an enemy of the United States.'
Hasan, 42, an Army psychiatrist, opened fire on a group of soldiers who were preparing for deployment to Afghanistan, killing 13 and wounding 32 before he was shot and permanently paralyzed by two civilian Fort Hood police officers.
He faces the death penalty if he convicted by a military jury on 13 specifications of premeditated murder. His court martial is set to begin in July.
The Army formalized its ongoing opposition to awarding the Purple Hearts in a position paper responding to language inserted in the Defense Authorization Bill, which would require the Secretary of the Army to award the medal.
Some of Hasan's wounded victims and families of the deceased have filed a federal lawsuit and among the demands is that each of the victims be awarded financial compensation and a Purple Heart.
"U.S. military personnel are organized, trained and equipped to combat foreign, not domestic, forces or threats," the Army wrote. "To expand the Purple Heart award criteria to include domestic criminal acts or domestic terror attacks would be a dramatic departure from the traditional Purple Heart award criteria."
A spokesman for the Secretary of the Army did not return a phone call seeking further comment.
Neal Sher, the New York-based lawyer for the Fort Hood victims, called the Army's claims 'rubbish.'
"This is a cynical travesty," Sher said. "The only thing the government has done is guarantee that anything done to help the victims will effectively impair and prevent Hasan's prosecution. These victims have been given the back of the hand by their government."
The Army says it has the interest of the victims in mind, saying any government declaration that Hasan is a terrorist could mean a delay of another 'year or more' in a trial which has already been pushed back several times by lengthy debates over Hasan's beard and other side issues.
"Such an unprecedented action would thwart the real and lasting measure that will bring closure to the grieving and harmed victims, the trial itself," the Army concluded.

Rights groups slam British town's under-16s curfew
LONDON (AP) ? Civil liberties activists have condemned an English town for imposing a nighttime curfew on all youngsters in a bid to combat rowdy behavior.
Officials in Barnsley, northern England, have barred under-16s from the town center between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless they are accompanied by an adult. Children breaching the curfew will be removed from the area.
The trial curfew takes effect this weekend and runs for six months.
Rights group Liberty said Saturday that the ban is wrong and could face a court challenge. Emma Norton, a lawyer for the group, said that "a blanket ban on 15-year-olds walking around on summer nights is discriminatory, counter-productive and just plain wrong."
Nick Pickles of the group Big Brother Watch called the measure "a waste of time and resources."

And he?ll definitely get a chance to win the job, since he?s the first signal-caller signed by the new regime in Cleveland, after previously starting in Washington and Oakland.
For now, though, he?s getting paid like a backup, and not a lot when compared to other backups.? A source with knowledge of the contract tells PFT that Campbell?s contract pays out $1.5 million in 2013.
Specifically, he gets a base salary of $1.5 million in 2013, $500,000 of which is fully guaranteed.
That said, if Campbell can win the job, he?ll make more money via incentives.? Specifically, he gets $150,000 for 50 percent playing time in 2013, 65 percent results in $350,000, and 80 percent triggers $600,000.
In 2014, Campbell?s base salary is a bit higher, at $2 million.? He also gets roster bonus of $250,000 due the third day of the league year.
But there are escalators for 2014 based on playing time in the coming season.? Campbell?s 2014 base salary will increase by $500,000 based on 30 percent playing time in 2013.? 40 percent playing time in 2013 increases the 2014 salary by another $500,000.? Ten more percent in 2013?? Another $500,000 in 2014.? And if Campbell takes 65 percent or more of the snaps in 2013, his $2 million salary will double.
Still, his backup pay for 2013 is low, and that?s largely because Campbell?s options were limited.? Especially in light of the egg he laid when he had a chance during 2012 to sub for Jay Cutler in Chicago, during that Monday night debacle against the 49ers.
Campbell could have stayed in Chicago and backed up Cutler, or he could have gone to Cleveland with a chance to win the starting job.? If Campbell pulls it off, he?ll be paid more on the back end.
And if he plays really well in 2013, the Browns likely will tear up the 2014 deal and sign him to something better.

What is the Nuffield Research Placement Scheme?
The Nuffield Research Placement Scheme is available?for Schools and Colleges in Northern Ireland, providing STEM (science / technology / engineering and mathematics) placements to Year 13/FE (AS level) students during the summer. The placements are funded by the Nuffield Foundation. Students meeting set criteria by the Nuffield Foundation can be paid ?80 per week for their placement. Students unsuccessful in obtaining a fully funded place but awarded a placement can have their travel costs covered upon application and retention of travel receipts.
What is the participating organisations support likely to entail;
- As placements are funded by the Nuffield Foundation there is no monetary cost to the participating organisation.
- Placements last minimum 4 weeks, maximum 6 weeks during which students are expected to be assigned to a specific project defined by the participating organisation and supervised by a member of staff. In the past, students have worked on both large scale projects contributing to a part of their supervisors projects, as well as working on smaller projects that researchers/engineers within the organisation have put on the backburner due to lack of time.
- Upon completing their placements students are required to have produced a technical report on the research/activities they have been involved in and present their report at a celebration evening.
- For Project Providers the placements provide an extra pair of hands, permit staff development, promote the company and inspire young people towards a STEM career.

Some Goodreads users are excited about the prospect of linking their Amazon devices to their Goodreads accounts while others feel betrayed by the decision.
The acquisition of Goodreads by book-buying giant Amazon is expected to close by July.

Goodreads lets readers view recommendations from other users and comment on their favorite titles, and having the website may give Amazon more of an ability to reach readers and recommend books.
In a statement on their website, Goodreads founder Otis Chandler wrote, ?Goodreads will continue to be the wonderful community that we all cherish. We plan to continue offering you everything that you love about the site?the ability to track what you read, discover great books, discuss and share them with fellow book lovers, and connect directly with your favorite authors?and your reviews and ratings will remain here on Goodreads. And it's incredibly important to us that we remain a home for all types of readers, no matter if you read on paper, audio, digitally, from scrolls, or even stone tablets.?
The site was founded in 2007 and now boasts more than 16 million members. Chandler wrote on the company?s blog that ?Goodreads and the awesome team behind it are not going away,? so it seems as if the website?s staff will stay on.
Chandler said of becoming part of the Amazon company, ?We truly could not think of a more perfect partner for Goodreads as we both share a love of books and an appreciation for the authors who write them. We also both love to invent products and services that touch millions of people.?
The acquisition should close by July. Details such as whether Amazon will have access to information shared by Goodreads users or whether Goodreads recommendations will carry over to users' Amazon accounts have not yet been shared.
However, some are not happy about the decision, with industry newsletter Shelf Awareness writing that some Goodreads members, including those who own independent bookstores, left the website after the announcement was made.
?Too bad,? one commenter named Wendi wrote on the Goodreads site. ?Another good independent thing bites the dust. Happy for you and the money you'll make off the cool thing you started; sad for me, and sad for the internet, which will soon be owned by Amazon and Facebook.?
Another commenter named Macartney wrote, ?This is a big bummer. I understand you guys and your backers are looking to make money, but this has ripped the rug out from under everything I enjoyed about Goodreads. Amazon is undermining and destroying publishing as we know it. I don't want to participate with that kind of company.??

Seasons on 'Game of Thrones' Planet: How They Work
Winter is coming on the HBO series "Game of Thrones," but no one seems to be able to predict when.
The planet's last summer persisted for seven years, while winter has been known to last a generation on the show. Understanding when the seasons will change is just one of the many issues plaguing the characters of the fantasy series based on the books by George R.R. Martin.
Although science doesn't play much of a role in the fictional world ? which comes complete with dragons, magic and a red comet that serves as an omen ? planetary science could help explain the odd seasonal changes on the three continents in the TV show's universe.
"Yes, seasons can last arbitrarily long times," Geoff Marcy, a veteran planet hunter at the University of California, Berkeley, wrote in an email to SPACE.com.
Seasons are for the most part controlled by the way a planet leans toward or away from its sun. For example, the Earth's axis does not run straight through the planet. Instead, it has a slight tilt that points the Northern Hemisphere toward the sun during part of the planet's orbit (causing summer) and away for another part (causing winter).

"The planet Uranus in our solar system has its North Pole spin axis pointed toward the sun during some 42 years, and then it points away from the Sun for another 42 years," wrote Marcy. "If you lived anywhere in the northern hemisphere, summer would last 42 years and then winter would last 42 years.? So the spin axis orientation makes all the difference."
Although Uranus' winter and summer might be extremely long, they are still predictable. On "Game of Thrones," no one knows when summer will end and winter will begin. It is possible that a "wobbly" axis could create variable seasonal length, said Greg Laughlin, an astrophysicist at the University of California Santa Cruz, but not necessarily on the timeline that show presents.
A wobbly tilt will not create rapid seasonal changes over the course of years or even decades, Laughlin said. Variability in the length of season happens after thousands of years. In other words, the characters on the television show would not be alive to see a distinct change in the length of any of the seasons.
Mars has a wobbly axis, according to Marcy. However, the Red Planet's seasons don't change from one year to the next. Instead, it takes thousands of years for the planet's axis to wobble enough to change the length of a season.
Seasons are also dependent upon the kind of planetary system the exoplanet finds itself in, Laughlin said.
"One situation that will lead to wildly variable seasons over long periods of time is if the planet in question is a member of a strongly interacting multiple planet system," Laughlin said, describing how a planet's orbit could be pulled out of whack by another planet.
These changes would also happen over the course of thousands or millions of years, Laughlin added. But this also might be a good explanation for the seasonal issues on the "Game of Thrones."
The books and TV show make mention of a second moon that disintegrated when it flew too close to its sun. Of course, in the book's lore that moon was actually an egg full of dragons ? so maybe it would be best not to apply too much real science to this kind of fiction.

Mayor Vince Gray's budget proposal, released this morning, appears to contain two contradictory trends for the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development: The office's funding would get a substantial boost, while the number of projects it will complete is expected to decline steadily over the next few years.
DMPED, under the mayor's proposal, would see a 9.1 percent increase in funding from fiscal year 2013, and its number of full-time-equivalent employees would increase from 61 to 84. (The jump in city funding for DMPED is even bigger when you take into account that federal resources for the office are dropping by 9.6 percent; DMPED funding from the D.C. general fund would increase 17.3 percent.) At the same time, the number of DMPED development project closings is projected to drop from nine in fiscal year 2013 to five in 2014 to just two in 2015.
What accounts for these seemingly conflicting trends? According to mayoral spokesman Pedro Ribeiro, there are two factors.
First, the balance between DMPED's two central functions?real estate development and business development?is shifting. "Historically, it?s been focused on real estate development," Ribeiro says. "One of the things we?re doing is increasing its capacity to do business development: tech, eds and meds [education and medical institutions], all the stuff that [business development chief] David Zipper?s been doing."
One reason for this shift is that the city is running out of space for development. "Eventually the real estate will run out," Ribeiro says. "We have to work on our business?retention?and business?nurturing."
The second factor is that the city is currently undertaking a small number of very big projects like St. Elizabeths in Ward 8 and Walter Reed in Ward 4 that will take more than a few years to complete. As a result, there won't be as many projects finished in the coming years, even if there are still more than 50 cranes in the air.

Prebiotics: Do supplements in baby formula help prevent allergies?
Mar. 25, 2013 ? Prebiotic supplements in infant formula may help to prevent eczema, according to a systematic review published in The Cochrane Library. However, the review highlights a lack of high quality evidence for the effects of prebiotics in preventing allergies.
It is thought that bacteria lining the gut may play an important role in a child developing sensitivities to certain foods and allergens, regulating immune responses and determining how they will react to the same substances in later life. Prebiotics are indigestible components of breast milk, fruit and vegetables that stimulate the growth and activity of healthy bacteria in the gut. They are distinct from probiotics, which are cultures of live bacteria such as those added to yoghurts and infant formula. Prebiotics can also be added to infant formula. However, it is unclear exactly what effect these supplements have on the development of allergies.
The researchers drew together data from four studies involving a total of 1,428 children. Children were given formula containing prebiotic supplements or, as a control, standard formula. Studies followed children to between four months and two years of age and reported the number who developed allergies. Eczema was significantly reduced in children who were fed formula containing prebiotics. Only two studies investigated asthma. The number of children who developed asthma was similar whether they were given formula with added prebiotics or without. In one study looking at urticaria (hives), giving children formula containing prebiotics did not prevent any cases of the allergy.
Only one study assessed the effect of giving formula containing prebiotics to high-risk children, who had close family members with allergies. In this study, prebiotics reduced both eczema and asthma, but there were no significant reductions in allergies overall in high-risk children. "Given these findings, it remains unclear whether the use of prebiotics should be restricted to infants at high risk of allergy or may have an effect in low risk populations," said lead researcher, John Sinn of the University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia.
"Overall, we found some evidence that infant formula containing prebiotic supplements can help prevent eczema in children up to two years of age," said Sinn. "However, the quality of existing evidence is generally low or very low. More high quality research is needed before we can recommend routine use of prebiotics for prevention of allergy."

Physicists at an underground laboratory have caught an ultra-rare particle in the act of reappearing.
For only the third time, scientists have detected elementary particles called neutrinos in the act of changing from one type, called muon, to another, called tau, on the several-hundred-mile trip between two laboratories.?
"It proves that the muon neutrinos are some kind of Superman-type particle: They get into a phone booth somewhere in between and change into something else," said Pauline Gagnon, a particle physicist at Indiana University, who was not involved in the experiment.

The nuclear reaction that powers the sun also produces massive numbers of solar neutrinos, tiny, uncharged particles that reach Earth and pass virtually undetected through ordinary matter, said researcher Antonio Ereditato, a physicist at the University of Bern in Switzerland and a member of the team that conducted the experiment, called OPERA (Oscillation Project with Emulsion-tRacking Apparatus).
"Each square centimeter of your body is touched every second by 60 billion neutrinos from the sun," Ereditato told LiveScience.
But for the last two decades, scientists have detected fewer neutrinos from the sun than they expected.
The dominant explanation for this neutrino shortage, proposed in 1957 by Italian physicist Bruno Pontecorvo, argued that neutrinos oscillate between three flavors, or types: electron, muon and tau.
As a result, neutrinos seem to disappear, because detectors try to measure them in one flavor when they have oscillated to another one.
Scientists have caught many neutrinos in the act of disappearing. But catching neutrinos as they appear has been far more elusive ? since 2010, only two other tau neutrinos have been discovered.
Reappearing particles
To find these rare events, physicists with the OPERA project shot a beam of muon neutrinos from the physics lab CERN in Switzerland 454 miles (730 kilometers) through the Earth's crust to Gran Sasso Laboratory, buried underneath a mountain in Italy. ?
During the travel, a very small fraction of the neutrinos naturally changed flavor, and when they reached the laboratory some tiny fraction of them were detected by a 4,000-ton "camera," transforming into a similar flavored particle and then decaying after a short distance. These fleeting events produce a faint blip of light recorded by one of 9 million photographic plates, Gagnon told LiveScience.
Because neutrinos have no charge, they only interact with matter through the weak force, which doesn't happen very often, Gagnon said.
Tau neutrinos morph into tau particles that travel for?just a few millimeters before decaying into hadrons, so they are even harder to detect.
The newly discovered tau neutrino bolsters the notion that the discovery of two others, in 2010 and 2012, were real.
This detection is statistically quite strong: The chance that the researchers are mistaken is about one in a million, Ereditato said.
The findings could provide other insights into tau neutrinos.
"Neutrinos have a mass and measuring this mass is quite difficult, because it's extremely small," Gagnon said.
But because neutrinos' mass determines how quickly they oscillate, and in turn how frequently they should be detected, finding tau neutrinos could help physicists nail down these elusive particles' mass, she said.

How Numbers Affect Your Happiness
It's pretty clear that money can't buy you happiness, and generally speaking we're pretty bad at predicting what else will. If you've ever wondered exactly why that is, the BBC takes a look at how numbers change our expectations.
We know that people who've had big payouts from the lottery aren't usually any happier for it, and the hedonic treadmill suggests that we just move back to the baseline of happiness after we get what we want. As far as predicting happiness is concerned, we're a little more unclear on why we're so bad at it. To figure it out, the BBC points to a study by Christopher Hsee of the Chicago School of Business:
[P]articipants were offered the option of working at a 6-minute task for a gallon of vanilla ice cream reward, or a 7-minute task for a gallon of pistachio ice cream. Under normal conditions, less than 30% of people chose the 7-minute task, mainly because they liked pistachio ice cream more than vanilla. For happiness scholars, this isn't hard to interpret ?those who preferred pistachio ice cream had enough motivation to choose the longer task. But the experiment had a vital extra comparison. Another group of participants were offered the same choice, but with an intervening points system: the choice was between working for 6 minutes to earn 60 points, or 7 minutes to earn 100 points. With 50-99 points, participants were told they could receive a gallon of vanilla ice cream. For 100 points they could receive a gallon of pistachio ice cream. Although the actions and the effects are the same, introducing the points system dramatically affected the choices people made. Now, the majority chose the longer task and earn the 100 points, which they could spend on the pistachio reward?even though the same proportion (about 70%) still said they preferred vanilla.
Essentially, participants in the study were maximizing their points even if that came at the expense of their happiness. The higher the points, the more they want it?even if doesn't make them as happy as the "cheaper" one. Basically, the higher number changed expectations. The fix? Don't rely on numbers when your happiness is concerned:
So next time you are buying a lottery ticket because of the amount it is paying out, or choosing wine by looking at the price, or comparing jobs by looking at the salaries, you might do well to remember to think hard about how much the bet, wine, or job will really promote your happiness, rather than simply relying on the numbers to do the comparison. Money doesn't buy you happiness, and part of the reason for that might be that money itself distracts us from what we really enjoy.
We've heard before that we're bad at interpreting numbers in retail, but it's usually in the context of getting a good deal (or not). In this case, it shows we're prone to sacrificing happiness for a bigger number, just because the higher price makes a product seem better.

New Report Finds Cutting Social Security and Medicare Would Hurt ...
When Republicans talk about cutting taxes, streamlining regulations, and paring back entitlements like Social Security and Medicare, they often claim to do so in defense of "small businesses," the hallowed "job creators" that comprise the backbone of the American economy.
Well, a new report from the Main Street Alliance, a network of state-based small business coalitions, says not so fast! It turns out that many owners of small businesses (businesses with 100 or fewer employees) are counting on Social Security and Medicare to shore up their own retirement years.
Small business owners, like their employees, face challenges saving for retirement. A 2012 study by the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy found that business owners are ?significantly less likely to hold retirement assets than private sector wage and salary workers,? and that ?owners of smaller businesses with fewer than 25 employees are significantly less likely to invest in retirement assets and have lower amounts of retirement assets than owners of larger firms.?
The study also found that ?financially vulnerable small business owners?those who hold a high percentage of their net worth in business assets?are less likely to invest in retirement assets than owners who are less net worth vulnerable.
Thirty-seven percent of small business owners in Washington State are over the age of 55, according to the report. That's an awful lot of small business owners heading toward or already past the retirement age. And many of them are counting on Social Security and Medicare.
Not that the conservative think tanks that think up such policies could give a shit. One of the biggest American myths is that we cherish and respect small businesses. We don't. We hate entrepreneurialism. In fact, our whole system is set up to put truly small businesses at a competitive disadvantage. For example, our pre-Obamacare healthcare system is designed to shift a disproportionate share of costs onto the backs of small businesses and people forced to buy on the individual market.
No, what we really cherish and respect are successful business owners. Make a ton of money and you're a national hero. But if you are losing money or just comfortably (or barely) scraping by (you know, most small business owners)? You're either lazy or stupid or both. You made bad choices. Go get a real job.
And whatever you do, don't you dare count on the "job creators" to subsidize your medical bills in your old age.

Pope Francis forces Argentine political about-face

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) ? Catholic doctrine considers the pope to be God's delegate on Earth. That alone might explain the remarkable about-face that Argentina's populist president Cristina Fernandez and most of her followers have managed to pull off in the days since the cardinal she treated as a political arch-enemy became Pope Francis.
But there are more earthly reasons for her turnaround, factors that have more to do with the dirty and often contradictory Argentine political landscape that Jorge Mario Bergoglio knows so well.
Fernandez had sought to neutralize the Buenos Aires cardinal's political influence for so long that she and her allies suddenly found themselves out of step with the joy most Argentines have shown at seeing one of their own running the Vatican.
For years, they had labeled him "chief of the opposition" and "accomplice of the dictatorship." Supporters of the president reportedly even tried lobbying other cardinals to turn against Bergoglio when choosing a new pontiff.
But that was before he became Francis. Now he's suddenly the pope who shares the same commitment to the poor and dream of a "Patria Grande" (Grand Homeland) that the populist leaders of Latin America have been pursuing. Fernandez announced this herself, after a private lunch at the Vatican with her former foe that had Argentines glued to their TV sets, marveling over the sudden change. "The president made the simple calculation that this confrontation was totally a losing proposition," and so the government decided to try to co-opt the Argentines' fervor for their pope, political analyst Claudio Fantini said.
In Argentina's polarized political universe, which treats everyone as either a friend or enemy of the president, Fantini called this a "Copernican shift," as if everyone suddenly learned the true center of the solar system.
And Francisco, whose sharp political skills have long been apparent to Argentines, responded with his own highly symbolic gestures.
He invited Fernandez to share his first official audience as pope and then ended speculation in Argentina that he might visit home before October's congressional elections, which could determine whether she will have enough votes to undo constitutional term limits and keep ruling beyond 2015. The president's opponents had hoped he would come in July or September, and perhaps push votes their way.
These and other gestures by Francis, 76, sent a signal that when it comes to the populist governments of Latin America, he'll avoid the kinds of direct confrontations that feed divisive politics, and instead will seek to co-opt them as well, joining forces to help the poorest benefit from society. "Bergoglio is a conservative, but his church career has always been directed toward doing things for the poor," said Fantini.
At first, Fernandez seemed stunned by the election of Bergoglio, the man whose opposition to gay marriage and adoption she had compared to the Inquisition. On these and other social issues, from providing free contraception to enabling transsexuals to change their official identities on demand to rewriting divorce laws, she had enough votes in congress to ignore his complaints. His frequent homilies urging Argentina's leaders stamp out corruption and fix societal ills were an annoyance, but not a threat to her political power.
Suddenly, the old man who lived alone in a church office building across the plaza from her government palace had become the world's the most powerful religious leader.
She delayed congratulating him for more than an hour after his name was announced, and then buried a reference to his selection 40 minutes into an otherwise routine speech that day.
She had refused for years to cross the plaza and meet with him. Now she would have to travel around the world and face him before the cameras.
Activists most loyal to Fernandez and her late husband, President Nestor Kirchner, were even more disoriented. For years, they had shown their annoyance every time Bergoglio criticized society's ills in a homily, or met with opposing politicians behind closed doors.
But Francis's election exposed the group's otherwise well-hidden fissures ? and threatened to break it apart.
Kirchnerism includes human rights leaders fiercely critical of the church hierarchy's failure to openly confront the 1976-1983 dictatorship, and others with close church connections. There are activists for the rights of sexual minorities and the separation of church and state, but also Catholics who are proud members of the same Peronist party that has dominated Argentine politics for generations.
And just as some Kirchnerites were cheering for Bergoglio ahead of the conclave, others were trying to derail his chances.
The Argentine daily El Cronista Comercial reported that some officials even tried to circulate a dossier of allegedly incriminating stories about Bergoglio with cardinals before they entered the conclave.
The Fernandez government denied it, but Bergoglio's allies described a similar campaign in 2005, when the cardinals were sent anti-Bergoglio emails just as they were preparing to choose John Paul II's successor. Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi called it a defamation campaign by a newspaper staffed by the "anti-clerical left."
Lombardi was aiming at journalist Horacio Verbitzky, who kept publishing allegations in the pro-government Pagina12 daily even after Francis was elected, accusing Bergoglio of provoking the kidnapping of two of his Jesuit priests during the dictatorship.
Verbitzky wasn't the only Kirchnerite unwilling to conform to the new posture.
National Library director Horacio Gonzalez took the microphone at a meeting of the "Carta Abierta" (Open Letter) group of pro-government intellectuals, called Francis a demagogue and described his election as some kind of global conspiracy.
"Every time he said something, he would shoot at the heart of the government, saying 'there are poor people and you all are provoking it,'" Gonzalez complained. He called the papal election part of "a project to divert the masses from the political processes that aren't controlled by the church."
Most Argentines apparently don't share such ideas now. A new nationwide poll by Management & Fit found nearly two-thirds have a positive image of Francis.
Meanwhile, other respected figures emerged, vouching for Bergoglio. Nobel Peace Prize winner Adolfo Perez Esquivel said he's in no way responsible for human rights violations. Emilio Persico, a leader of the pro-government Evita Movement, proudly recalled that Bergoglio led a mass to pray for the health of Hugo Chavez before the Venezuelan leader's death.
To help reorient the government's base of support, posters quickly appeared around Buenos Aires with the image of Francis over the words "Argentine and Peronist." Another showed the hands of both Fernandez and Francis as she gave him a traditional set for drinking "mate," an herbal infusion popular in Argentina, during their Vatican encounter. That poster carried the phrase "we share hopes."
On her return to Argentina, the often-combative Fernandez described the new relationship in almost mystical terms.
"The marvelous thing is to re-encounter each other," she said. "God made us in his image, but all of us in a different way, so that we have the option of deciding who we want to be. This is the human condition: diversity, plurality, and acceptance."
Political analyst Ricardo Rouvier put it more cynically: that within Kirchnerism, politics triumphed over ideology.
"The first reactions from this space were ideological: he's an ally of the dictatorship, a right-wing populist," he said. Then came a "clearly political presidential reaction: moving rapidly from being perplexed and possibly uncomfortable to joining forces and actively participating" in the Francis phenomenon.

Florence teen uses coupons to help homeless pets in big way | al.com
FLORENCE, Alabama - A Florence teen is being honored by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for her work helping animals in her local animal shelter.
Monica Williford, 14, has received a Star Street Teamer Award from peta2, PETA's youth division. According to a news release from the group, the Street Team is a group of youth activists who help animals through in-person events, online campaigns and social media.
Williford won the award for her take on "extreme couponing," the news release said. The Florence Freshman Center student collects every coupon for pet food, toys and other supplies that she can find and uses them to buy the items, at low- or no-cost. She then donates the supplies to the animal shelter.
"Monica looked at the national mini-craze of extreme couponing, and the first thing that came to her mind--and her heart--was how she could seize on it to help cats, dogs, and other animals," Marta Holmberg, peta2's director, said in the news release. "Young people are leading the animal rights charge, and Monica is a trailblazer they can look to for inspiration."
Williford also volunteers her time at the animal shelter and makes candles and other craft items for the shelter to use for fundraising efforts.
For her efforts, the teen was awarded a framed certificate and has been featured on peta2.com's "Everyday Heroes" feature.

Will The Next iPhone Keep Ahead of Android?
If Apple?s regular release schedule is to be trusted, we should expect a new iPhone this summer. Will it be called the iPhone 5S with small improvements over the iPhone 5? Or will the pressure from rival Android phones force Apple to go big and make a complete overhaul?
So far, the rumor mills point to an incremental upgrade ? no revolutionary changes. So let?s read the tealeaves and try to predict what will be changed. And remember, this is all conjecture with no official information forthcoming from Apple.
New Flash and Better Camera
I like to start with the fun stuff, like the camera. Certainly, the next iPhone could get a megapixel upgrade. There are some Android phones that brag 13 Megapixels, and while it?s possible Apple could increase the resolution of their camera, I think a more interesting upgrade would be the inclusion of a new, smart flash that incorporates Phillips multi-color LED. To match ambient light, the camera could elect to use a white flash (in fluorescent or colder lighting) or a yellow flash to match warmer room tones (candlelight, camp-fires, or accent lighting).
Faster
Now for the guts of the new phone: leaked photos published by iOSDoc imply the iPhone will be getting an upgrade from its current dual core A6 processor to a quad core A7 processor. Yes, more cores mean a faster phone, but is this a life-changing speed improvement? Um, no.
Bigger Screen is Doubtful
There have been tons of rumors about Apple increasing the screen size from 4 inches to 4.8 inches to compete with some of the Android ?Phablets? like the Note. But this rumor seems a little thin with CEO Tim Cook stating publically on Apple?s Q1 2013 Earnings Call that he thinks Apple made the right decision to stick with a smaller screen.
Wireless Charging
Unlike current wireless charging where you have to put a device onto a pad that?s plugged into a power source, Apple has applied for a patent to use something called Near Field Magnetic Resonance (NFMR). With this technology, a home base (a computer or larger device) serves as a hub that can charge the phone anywhere within a meter?s proximity. This could also be a boon for selling more Mac laptops if they become the primary vehicle for wireless NFMR charging.
Biometric Fingerprint Security
Rumors are flying about a fingerprint sensor on the home key to allow for biometric security. This could be a smart idea if Apple wants to shore up public perception of the device?s security before rolling out the Nea
r Field Communications (NFC) wave-to-pay technology that turns your phone into a credit card.
IOS 7
For the first time ever, I am including an IOS update in the ?Fun Rumors? category. While the iPhone operating system (currently IOS 6) is not usually an opportunity for big innovation, this portion of the company has recently been taken over by Jonathon Ive, Apple?s superstar design guru. He is no doubt feeling pressure to bring his genius to bear on software (good luck with that) and may surprise us with a few cool new tricks. I expect a Siri upgrade at the very least, and a determination to show that Apple?s maps have recovered from the debacle of the IOS 6 roll out.
Lower Cost iPhone
Where Android phones pose the greatest clear and present danger to the iPhone is on price. Many models are free with a 2-year contract. So the $199 price tag of the iPhone with a 2-year contract is just too steep for many. The biggest price pressure is coming from emerging markets like China and Brazil, where Apple has to lower the price of their only phone in the initial land grab for new smartphone users.

If Apple introduces a free-on-2-year-contract phone, this lower cost version will almost certainly still be able to access faster LTE data networks. It will possibly have a slower Snapdragon System on a Chip (SOC) processor from Qualcomm. It might include a bigger battery, which could increase the phone?s thickness from the current 7.6 mm to a rumored 8.2 mm. It could have a lower resolution camera. And the most interesting possibility: its case could be from a cheaper plastic or fiberglass, which could allow for a multitude of colors.
Bottom Line
The inclusion of a cheaper iPhone could be a huge boon to consumers. If you?ve been holding out until Apple?s flagship device became more affordable, don?t let the slightly diminished technical specs deter you. The beauty of the iPhone is that it?s intuitive and fun to use ? but that?s a function of the operating system, not the hardware. If it were me, I?d wait to buy until the consumer testers run the cheaper iPhone through it?s paces and make sure there?s nothing glaringly wrong, and then I?d get it. That is, if Apple actually releases two versions as part of its traditional June release cycle.

Research reveals protective properties of influenza vaccines

Collaborating scientists from Nationwide Children's Hospital, Baylor Institute for Immunology Research, and Mount Sinai School of Medicine have identified an important mechanism for stimulating protective immune responses following seasonal influenza vaccinations. The study was published in Science Translational Medicine, a journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
While seasonal influenza vaccines protect 60 to 90 percent of healthy adults from "the flu," the mechanisms providing that protection are still not well understood.
The study led by Octavio Ramilo, MD, chief of Infectious Diseases and an investigator in the Center for Vaccines and Immunity at Nationwide Children's Hospital and professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine, and Hideki Ueno, MD, PhD, an investigator at the Baylor Institute for Immunology Research at Baylor University, demonstrates how certain T cells in the blood are stimulated to provide protective antibody responses with seasonal flu vaccines.
Antibodies are produced by specific white blood cells or B cells, which serve as an immune defense against foreign bodies such as the influenza virus. Helper T cells, another type of white cell, are essential for the generation of B cells.
Blood samples before and after influenza vaccination from three groups of healthy study participants were analyzed for antibody responses. The groups included two sets of adults, one receiving flu vaccines during the 2009-2010 winter and the other receiving vaccination during the 2011-2012 winter. The third group included children receiving the flu vaccine during the 2010-2011 winter.
Analyses show that a temporary increase in a unique subset of helper T cells expressing the co-stimulator molecule ICOS adds to the immune response by helping B cells produce influenza-specific antibodies.
Results indicated that at day seven following the administration of a flu vaccine in all groups, stimulated T cells were evident, contributing to the development of the immune response.
The T cells positively correlated with increased antibodies against each flu virus strain examined, with the exception in the children's group against the swine-origin H1N1 virus.
"Given that seasonal influenza vaccines induce antibody responses mainly through boosting the recall response of the immune system, this lack of correlation might reflect the lack of H1N1 specific immunity in some children," explains study co-author Emilio Flano, PhD, a principal investigator in the Center for Vaccines and Immunity at Nationwide Children's and an associate professor of Pediatrics at OSU College of Medicine.
"This is consistent with the fact that these children had not been vaccinated or naturally exposed to the H1N1 virus prior to being vaccinated during the 2010-2011 winter," said study co-author Santiago Lopez, MD, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Center for Vaccines and Immunity and a resident at Nationwide Children's.
Further experiments demonstrated that this unique subset of helper T cells can boost production of existing antibodies that fight flu by stimulating memory B cells, but do not help production of new antibodies by na?ve B cells.
"We're gratified that our study provides evidence of one of the essential events associated with the immune response following seasonal influenza vaccination," says Dr. Ramilo. "Understanding these processes is a key step toward developing more effective vaccines."
